Larry Branen
Alfred Larry Branen was born on January 5, 1945, in Caldwell, Idaho. He grew up on a diversified dairy farm in Southern Idaho and was active in 4-H and FFA.He was 4-H winner in dairy, State 4-H vice president and winner of the District FFA Public Speaking Contest.
Professor Branen received a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science from the University of Idaho in 1967 and his Ph.D. in Food Science from Purdue University in 1970.He worked at Purdue from 1976 to 1970 as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant, and at the University of Wisconsin as Assistant Professor of Food Science, 1970-73.From 1974 to 1981, he served as Assistant, then Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Washington State University. From 1981-1983 he was Professor and Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska.Since 1983, he has been at the University of Idaho and served in a number of capacities including: Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology from 1993-1997, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture, 1983-1986, Dean, College of Agriculture from 1986-1993, and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1990-1991. Dr. Branen has worked on a long list of research projects, plus has experience in Extension work and International work.His lengthy vita at the University of Idaho lists two pages of committee service, over three pages of publications and a four-page list of presentations.He has received a number of awards including: Alumni Award for Excellence, Influential Faculty Member, 1995; Idaho Grain Growers Recognition Award in 1993; State of Idaho 4-H Alumnus Award in 1993; and Honorary American Farmers Degree, National FFA in 1988. Through the years, some of his international experience includes being a consultant to evaluate food science programs in Rajasthan Agricultural University in Rajasthan, India.Co-chair of the International Board of Deans, traveled to China to establish cooperative programs, traveled to Finland and presented several seminars to toxicology groups, team taught short courses on solar drying at Sam Ratulangi University, Indonesia and traveled to Pakistan to evaluate a long-term project of the University of Idaho. And yet, throughout his prestigious educational career, Dr. Branen still has time to be involved in civic and community activities.He serves on the Moscow-Latah County Economic Development Council Board of Directors, the Moscow Urban Renewal Agency Commissioner, a member of the Incubator Advisory Committee, Moscow-Latah County Business Incubator as well as numerous offices and committees in his local church.Setting all of that aside, probably his highest honor has been to be a Little League Coach.
